UK Bike Registration

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT SOME IMPORTED MACHINES ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE MACHINE THAT THEY ARE BADGED AS!

We regularly receive enquiries regarding registering or re-registering of Vespa scooters. We can help!

We can provide a Certificate stating the date of manufacture of the machine that will be accepted by the DVLA. This Certificate is a requirement of the DVLA and determines the type of Age Related number to be issued.

Firstyly three DONT'S
Do not send original documents. Photocopies only please.
Do not post by Special Delivery or Recorded Delivery. This may delay the certificate.
Do not ignore the NEW Postal Charges, especially with large envelopes.

Money Saving Tip
If you know the original registration number of your Vespa and wish to retain it, check with the DVLA that the machine is not already on the computer. If it is on the computer a dating certificate will not be required. To retain a reg. number documentary evidence is required. This can be an old tax disc, a green or buff log book or an old MOT certificate. Information from retained records held by County Record Offices and some Trusts may also be accepted. With the above information it is possible to retain the original number if it has not been transferred or re-allocated. Retention of an old number is entirely at the discretion of the DVLA.
The following information is required to enable us to issue the Certificate:-

>Due to an increasing number of bikes coming into the UK from the Far East we now require four extra photographs, one from each of all four angles. The photo from the engine side must have the panel removed and the dual seat raised.

>A pencil rubbing of the Chassis and Engine numbers including the prefix where applicable. If the number of both frame and engine is the same one rubbing is not acceptable. A photograph of the chassis and engine numbers together with an accurate indication of the position on the machine where the numbers can be found , is also acceptable. It is probably better to do this before painting if you are restoring the machine.

>A photocopy of all/any paperwork that you may have relating to the machine.

>A cheque for £10 payable to the Vespa Club of Britain

>A stamped addressed envelope.

Send all the above to:- W. Drake, 23, Archers Road, Eastleigh, Hants. SO50 9AQ.

If the Vespa Club of Britain cannot adequately identify a Vespa a certificate will be refused and the fee returned.

Italian Manufactured Vespas:-These machines have a number with a prefix beginning with the letter‘V’ for both engine and chassis. Please note that numbers prefixed IGM, GM or OGM are not frame numbers but may be included in your submitted information as an additional means of identifying the machine.

All other manufacturers had there own system not generally confused with the Italian models. If you have any documentation including a foreign registration number, this should also be included in your application.

If you are unsure of the origin of your scooter, the Vespa Club of Britain can help identify a machine before issuing a Certificate.

If your Vespa does not have any supporting documentation an Age Related number will be issued.
Recently imported machines (i.e. machines previously registered abroad) will also attract an Age Related number.

To register or re- register a machine you will be required to complete form V765 and V55/5 and send it to the DVLA together with your dating Certificate, a current MOT Certificate, an Insurance Certificate and the appropriate fee. You will probably be required to present the machine at your local office (LVLO) where the chassis (and sometimes the engine) numbers will be verified. The machine must be MOT’d and the rider insured.

Remember that the numbers must be legible for a non scooterist to read. It is suggested that a feature is made of the chassis number in order to facilitate easy reading.

At this point, all being well , a registration number will be allocated.
