Dating Certificates

Need to register or re- register your Vespa?

To register or re-register a machine you will be required to complete form V765 and V55/5 and send it to the DVLA together with a Dating Certificate (or other evidence – see below), a current MOT Certificate, an Insurance Certificate and the appropriate fee.

You will probably be required to present the machine at your local office (LVLO) where the chassis (and sometimes the engine) numbers will be verified. Remember that the numbers must be legible. It is suggested that a feature is made of the chassis number in order to facilitate easy reading.

Dating Certificates – Do you need one?

If you know the original registration number of your Vespa and wish to retain it, check with the DVLA if the scooter is already on their computer system. If it is a dating certificate will not be required.

To retain a registration number documentary evidence is required. This can be an old tax disc, a green or buff log book or an old MOT certificate. Information from retained records held by County Record Offices and some Trusts can also be accepted.

With the above information it is possible to retain the original number if it has not been transferred or re-allocated. However, retention of an old number is entirely at the discretion of the DVLA.

If you do not know the origin of your scooter, the original registration or have no paperwork the Vespa Club of Britain is normally able to provide you with a Certificate stating the date of manufacture. This certificate determines the type of age related registration number to be issued by the DVLA.

Just for your information:

Italian Vespas have a number with a prefix beginning with the letter “V” for both engine and chassis. Please note that numbers prefixed IGM, GM or OGM are not frame numbers but may be included in your submitted information as an additional means of identifying the machine.

If you have any documentation including a foreign registration number, this should also be included in your application.

To apply please send:

  • 4 photographs, one from each side & front / back. The photo from the engine side must have both the panel removed and the seat raised
  • A photocopy of all/any paperwork that you may have relating to the machine (Please do not send originals)
  • Any numbers you can find i.e. on the frame/chassis/foreign number plate etc
(Please do either a pencil rubbing of the Chassis and Engine numbers including the prefix where applicable or a photograph of the chassis and engine numbers together with an accurate indication of the position on the machine where the numbers can be found)
  • Your contact details & a stamped self-addressed envelope

Please send the above together with a cheque made payable to ‘Vespa Club of Britain’ for £10.00 to:
W. Drake, 23 Archers Road, Eastleigh, Hants, SO50 9AQ

(Do not send by recorded delivery as this will delay your application)

NOTE:
If we cannot adequately identify a Vespa your fee will be refunded.
Please be aware that some imported scooters are not necessarily the machines that they are badged as!
